Scranton man arrested, accused of threatening others with an AK-47

A Scranton man threatened others with an AK-47 rifle Saturday after an argument, city police said.

Elvis Nieves-Medina, 33, of 1010 Townhouse Blvd., is charged with making terroristic threats, assault and endangering others.

According to the criminal complaint:

At about 7:30 p.m., officers received multiple reports of a man threatening others with an AK-47 rifle outside 1310 Oram St.

When police arrived at the scene, Jeff Allen, 1310 Oram St., who had reported the incident, said Nieves-Medina had left his front door and went inside 1308 Oram St.

Shortly after police officers surrounded the apartment building, Nieves-Medina came out and dropped a rifle magazine and keys, police said.

Police directed Nieves-Medina to lift his hands, and officers spotted a pistol — later determined to be loaded — in his waistband. Officers also recovered three magazines and 39 bullets from Nieves-Medina, according to the complaint.

Officers then cleared 1308 Oram St. of other occupants. They found the AK-47 rifle in a third-floor bedroom, under a comforter, the complaint states. Police said the rifle was loaded and had a bullet in its chamber.

Police said they were told by Elijah Allen that he had gone outside to his father’s car to get his phone charger with his sister, Kayla Allen. When Elijah Allen turned around, he saw Nieves-Medina sitting in a vehicle with a neighbor.

Elijah Allen and Nieves-Medina had a brief verbal argument, before Nieves-Medina drove away, charges read.

About 15 minutes later, Nieves-Medina returned with the rifle, walked onto Allen’s front porch at 1310 Oram St. and looked through the front door. When Nieves-Medina became aware police had been called, he went to an upstairs apartment at 1308 Oram St., police said.

Nieves-Medina remains at Lackawanna County Prison.
