A new Scottish Conservative MP admitted she did not vote in the EU referendum, saying she "left it to everyone else".

Kirstene Hair, 28, who took Angus from the SNP, overturning their 11,230 majority, said she predicted a Remain win but didn't want to vote in the referendum.

Ms Hair, who took Angus from the SNP, overturning their 11,230 majority, told The Courier: “I didn’t vote on Brexit.

“I took the decision not to vote on it. It was incredibly difficult. The first time I’ve never voted in my life.

“It was very difficult because you get two arguments very strong on both sides.

“I just ultimately couldn’t make that decision and I thought I would therefore go with the will of the UK which if I’m honest I thought we would remain.

“But I left that to everyone else.”

Her constituency voted Remain; 55.3 per cent voted to stay in, while 44.7 per cent voted to leave.

Scotland as a whole also voted Remain by 62pc to 38pc.

Some have responded with derision after finding out she did not vote.

One Twitter user wrote: "Loving the new Tory MP for Angus who didn't vote in EU ref cos it was too difficult to decide. Great quality in an MP."

SNP MSP Gillian Martin said: "So I spent time yesterday discussing with school pupils why it's important to vote. And a new Tory elected representative says this."

Ms Hair is the first Conservative representative Angus since 1987, and is now one of the youngest MPs in Parliament.
