Science Hill High School students gain firsthand knowledge at Mullican Flooring

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Some career and technical education (CTE) students at Science Hill High School got to see how successful, locally-headquartered company Mullican Flooring processes and distributes its wood products.

The group of CTE students began by briefly hearing the almost 40-year history of the company, which began in Johnson City and now operates its headquarters near Watauga Road. The company also has locations in Norton, Virginia; Ronceverte, West Virginia; and Holland, New York.

“Accompanied by STEM teacher Dr. Brad Gentry and Josh Jarnigan, CTE college and career coordinator, the students learned about Mullican’s processes, from bringing green wood into the plant for drying and processing to finishing, packaging and shipping,” the release states.

The group learned firsthand about the technical facets of hardwood flooring production, from drying out green wood to processing and finishing various products. At the end of the tour, students heard about the various employment opportunities in the flooring industry.
