Sci-Tech Center to host eclipse programs at village libraries, school

Mar. 15—WATERTOWN — The Sci-Tech Center of Northern New York will hold solar eclipse workshops at three area libraries and a school in preparation for the April 8 total eclipse. The free, hour-long, hands-on programs are designed for children ages 8 through 12.

The programs will demonstrate the astronomical science behind an eclipse, while emphasizing how to protect eyes and view it safely. Children will make their own safe-viewing projection boxes to take home, and will also be provided with four pairs of safe viewing glasses for their use as well as for family or friends.

In addition, children will also put together their own solar clock, a sun dial to take home. If weather permits on the workshop day, the projection boxes, viewing glasses, and sun dials may be tried under actual sun light.

There is no charge for the workshop, and all materials will be provided. However, space is limited so reservations are required by calling the library directly.

This work is supported by the Simons Foundation and is part of its "In the Path of Totality" initiative.

The workshop schedule:

—10 a.m. Saturday: Evans Mills Public Library. 315-629-4483.

—11 a.m.: Saturday, March 23: Hay Memorial Library, Sackets Harbor. 315-646-2228.

—11 a.m.: Saturday, March 30: Sally Ploof Hunter Memorial Library, Black River. 315-773-5163.

There is also a Sci-Tech eclipse program on Wednesday, March 27, at H.T. Wiley Intermediate School, Watertown, for students.
