Bastian Schweinsteiger will take over from the late Franz Beckenbauer as patron of a charity golf tournament, the event confirmed on Friday.

Founded in the 1980s, the tournament has raised some €2.5 million ($2.7 million) for the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation.

German football icon Beckenbauer died in January, and Schweinsteiger, also a former Bayern Munich and national team player, will now act as patron for the Kaiser-Cup event in the Bavarian town of Bad Griesbach.

"It is a great honour for me to continue the tradition and legacy of this tournament of Franz Beckenbauer," Schweinsteiger said in a statement.

Beckenbauer's widow, Heidi Beckenbauer, said that "there is no better patron than Bastian.

"Bastian will carry on Franz's golfing fire and we as the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation can do so much good with it. This is completely in the spirit of Franz," she said.
