Schuylkill man dies after crash on Route 183 in northern Berks
May 9—A Pottsville man was fatally injured when his pickup truck crashed along Route 183 at its intersection with the Appalachian Trail in Bethel Township, state police said.
William J. Lecher, 56, was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon in Geisinger St. Luke's Hospital, Orwigsburg, where he was taken by ambulance after the crash.
State police at Schuylkill Haven provided this account:
Lecher was traveling north on Route 183 about 2:30 p.m. when he crossed over the median, the southbound lanes and the shoulder, striking two PennDOT road signs and then an embankment.
Lecher was found unresponsive in the truck. Troopers removed him and attempted lifesaving measures. An ambulance crew took over and transported Lecher to the hospital.
Lecher was the 16th person to die this year as a result of motor vehicle crashes on Berks County roads.
