Schuylkill County post offices taking part in Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Saturday; leave food by mailboxes for collection

POTTSVILLE — Schuylkill County residents are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items near their mailboxes for collection on Saturday for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

The nationwide effort is coordinated by the National Association of Letter Carriers, U.S. Postal Service and National Rural Letter Carriers Association.

“All the food that we collect with the event is going to stay here in Schuylkill County,” Ray Beltz, coordinator of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in the county, said Friday.

Beltz, who is also a union steward of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 500, based in Harrisburg, said 8,600 pounds of food was collected in 2023 in Pottsville.

To his knowledge, the Schuylkill Haven, Port Carbon, Cressona, New Philadelphia, Shenandoah, Mahanoy City and Frackville post offices are participating.

Food collected from Port Carbon, Cressona, New Philadelphia and Pottsville goes to the city office for distribution to the Salvation Army in Pottsville, United Presbyterian Church in Pottsville, and Holy Family Church in Minersville, Beltz said.

Donations collected in Schuylkill Haven go to a church there, he said.

Since the effort started 30 years ago nationwide, more than 1.82 billion pounds of food has been collected, according to the U.S. Postal Service.
