Mar. 25—Niagara University is set to receive more federal funding for a new campus building.

U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Monday they have secured $1 million for the university to build the new "Integrated STEM Center." The proposed building would be 20,000 square feet and house STEM academic programs at the Lewiston campus.

Niagara University had last year received $1.4 million in the fiscal year 2023 end-of-year spending package for its Academic Innovation Hub in downtown Niagara Falls and a $1.3 million Economic Development Administration grant for workforce training.

The funding is part of the $2.1 million in total announced from the fiscal year 2024 funding package meant for higher education and youth violence prevention. Other recipients included St. Bonaventure University's Jandoli School of Communications, the Community Action Organization of Western New York, and the Wyoming County Emergency Operations Center.

"This $2+ million in federal funding will support projects to help reduce and prevent youth violence in Western New York, equip students with the resources they need to excel academically and ensure first responders have the necessary equipment to respond to emergencies," said Gillibrand.
