Schools close across the Northeast as Hurricane Sandy blasts region
Thousands of students from Pennsylvania to New York, at all levels of schooling, are getting an unexpected fall break in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
The New York City school system — the country’s largest — canceled classes scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Charter schools are also closed. The city is using over 70 school buildings as makeshift relief shelters.
All of the State University of New York’s campuses in New York City and Long Island will be closed on Tuesday, the GenerationSUNY Twitter feed confirmed.
Public schools have also closed across New Jersey, as well as in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston.
The main branch of Penn State University in University Park canceled classes and all afternoon activities on Monday. The school will evaluate the weather situation early Tuesday.
Harvard University suspended classes Monday, but expects to resume normal operations on Tuesday morning.
The University of Connecticut was closed Monday and will remain closed Tuesday.
At Princeton, where many students are away on fall break, the school encouraged students who remain on and near campus to obtain extra water and food.
Law schools up and down the East Coast, including Georgetown, the University of Maryland and the University of Virginia canceled classes Monday. Many schools, such as Rutgers University School of Law in both Newark and Camden, canceled classes for Tuesday as well.
