School worker changed relative’s grades to push student into top 10%, Texas cops say

A school district worker accused of altering a family member’s grades has been arrested and fired from her position, according to school officials and police.

The 35-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday, March 13, and charged with tampering with a government record, KTRE reported, citing an arrest affidavit. She is listed as the junior high and high school registrar for the Groveton Independent School District.

Beginning in the 2021-2022 school year, the school worker made more than 145 changes to the relative’s grades without permission from the student’s teachers, according to court documents obtained by KETK.

She was allowed to change grades as part of her job, but only with authorization from teachers, police told the East Texas News.

“The document said she changed the student’s class average for a six-week period, which would then impact the student’s semester grade,” KYTX reported. “The 6-weeks’ averages, and in-turn semester averages, were consistently increased and the changes led to the student rising into the top 10 percent.”

Police said the student rose from being ranked 15th to 5th due to the school worker’s alterations, according to KYTX.

The woman was fired Jan. 29 after the school district confirmed the allegations. Following her firing, law enforcement was notified and the police investigation began, the school district said in a statement.

“Upon discovery of the alterations, the superintendent ordered the immediate investigation of the potentially affected records of all students grades 6-12,” according to the statement. “Groveton ISD is working diligently to correct the alterations and to ensure the accuracy of each student’s educational record.”

Groveton is about a 110-mile drive northeast of Houston.
