School districts announce delays, closures due to road conditions, outages

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — After severe thunderstorms roared across the region overnight leading to power outages across communities in our region, school districts are operating under delays on Friday, April 12.

Alleghany Highlands Public Schools announced due to water conditions from heavy rain and debris, all schools will open two hours late on Friday. Officials say 12-month employees, other than custodial and maintenance workers will report two hours late.

In addition, AHPS says the senior government trip has been postponed.

Craig County Public Schools will also be under a two-hour delay because of weather conditions and potential road debris.

Roanoke County Public Schools says due to several downed trees and power lines, especially in the Southwest area, buses will be delayed this morning. The district says school buses might not be able to reach students in the following neighborhoods:

  • Whistler

  • Mt. Chestnut

  • Woodbrook Road

  • Grandin Rd. Extension

  • Sugarloaf Farms

  • Keagy Road

Students at Spiller Elementary School, in Wythe County, will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. due to power outages.
