Corning Community College and Elmira College sign new scholarship agreement

CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) – SUNY Corning Community College and Elmira College inked a new agreement Thursday. It’s aimed at helping community college graduates pay for the cost of higher education.

“I’m pleased to be here with my Elmira College counterpart Chuck Lindsay, to engage in this historic signing,” said William Mullaney, President of SUNY Corning Community College.

“When it comes to an agreement like this, it’s all about providing students access and opportunity,” said Charles Lindsay, President of Elmira College. “When students get to the 2 year-degree program mark, we want to try to remove as many barriers as possible, if they’re choosing to go on to a 4-year degree.”

The agreement says students SUNY CCC graduates are “guaranteed acceptance and Junior Standing at Elmira College.” SUNY CCC graduates are also eligible for a “generous scholarship” depending on their grade-point-average or GPA.

The agreement says: “Students transferring with an Associate’s degree from CCC to EC with a grade point average of 3.3 or higher will receive a $20,000 Transfer Scholarship. Students transferring with a GPA of 3.2 and lower will earn a $15,000 Transfer Scholarship. Additional need-based grant funding will be available to students who qualify based on demonstrated need. Funding for these scholarships is renewable as long as the student is enrolled and remains in good academic standing.”

Without any scholarships or financial aid, the Elmira College website shows tuition & fees for a full-time student are listed at $37,932 per year.

“What I can share with you is that over 80% of our students here at Corning Community College are on some form of financial aid.” said SUNY CCC President William Mullaney. “We’re seeing more part-time students who have to work and go to school. So, it takes them longer to graduate. A scholarship like this enables them to take on a few less hours at work, it gets them to their degree faster, and into the workplace faster, and then earning money for them and their families.”

“Student debt is a real issue,” added Dr. Patricia Ireland, Provost at Elmira College. “I think especially in Community College, where you have a mix of traditional age, and non-traditional age students. Some of them have families and it’s very difficult to maintain studies and come out without huge debts. Having a very generous degree at Elmira College, we can help them finish their degree, find a job, or go to graduate school without huge student debt. That’s very very important because if you’re saddled with a lot of debt, it’s really hard for you to get ahead and really have a good quality of life.”

Elmira College President Charles Lindsay says the agreement also encourages students to continue their education and careers in our area.

“Making sure our graduates have the professional skills that they need to succeed in the Southern Tier and give back to the community here. That’s what it’s all about,”
