Schiff advances in California Senate race

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is advancing to the general election in California’s closely watched Senate race, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ.

Schiff had been polling at the top of the competitive nonpartisan primary field, which also includes fellow Democratic Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, as well as Republican baseball great Steve Garvey.

In California’s nonpartisan system, the top two vote-getters move on to the general election in November, regardless of party affiliation. Schiff’s allies had worked to elevate Garvey, the Republican, in hopes of an easier red-blue match-up in the general, rather than a battle between Democrats.

Schiff started the year with nearly $35 million in the bank and boasts national name recognition for his work as the lead House impeachment manager in former President Trump’s first trial, and for his time with the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack at the U.S. Capitol.

The candidates are vying for the seat vacated by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), which is now being filled temporarily by appointee Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.). Butler opted not to join the crowded primary field to try to hold onto the seat for a full term.

The four front-runners are also trying for a partial term in the Senate, to briefly take over from Butler before the next term starts in January 2025.
