We were beginning to have doubts that it would ever see the cold light of day, but a solo Black Widow movie is finally, officially happening.

The good news is, a script is reportedly in the works already – and the even better news is, it's being written by a woman: Jac Schaeffer.

So, with the Black Widow movie set to go down the same route that rival DC took Wonder Woman, what does its lead hope to see when Natasha Romanoff is at last given the spotlight?

Well, Scarlett Johansson actually voiced her ideas for the solo project two years ago, so as well as giving us insight into what Black Widow's tone might be, this exchange also proves how long it can take for a female-driven title to be given the green light.

(A story for another day, perhaps.)

Speaking to Variety in 2016, Scarlett sounded optimistic about the potential direction for a Black Widow spin-off:

"There's a lot of opportunity to mine that storyline," she explained.

"She's got a really rich origins story. There's a lot of places you can go – you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow programme."

Teasing "all kinds of stuff", Scarlett continued: "You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she's part of."

A solo superhero spin-off that doubles as a thoughtful, fleshed-out character study? Uh, yes please.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige also gave fans an idea of what Black Widow might look like (again, two years ago) by promising the character will have "amazing stories in her own right".

"We think she's an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson's portrayal of her is amazing," he enthused.

Unsurprisingly, there's no Black Widow release date just yet, but Scarlett Johansson will next be seen in Avengers: Infinity War later this year. We'll take it.
