Scammer trying to sell EDN 'People's Choice' plaques

Apr. 25—Local business owners have reported being solicited via phone and email to buy a 2024 Effingham Daily News People's Choice winner's plaque. The email is fraudulently using the Effingham Daily News logo.

This is not affiliated with the Effingham Daily News "2024 People's

Choice" awards, noted EDN Advertising Supervisor Jody Hardiek. Winners are not charged for the newspaper's awards, she added.

"We are not affiliated in any way with Top Rated Online com, which is where the email seems to have originated from, or any other company claiming to sell the plaques," Hardiek said. "Award recipients of the 2024 People's Choice awards do not pay for the plaque that we provide to them nor do they pay to be nominated or to be on the ballot."

Anyone who receives a call asking them to purchase plaques should contact their local police.
