Scammer posing as Horry County police officers making demands for money, department says

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The Horry County Police Department is warning of a phone scam that involves a person posing as law enforcement making calls and demanding money.

“Our agency has been made aware of a scammer or scammers who are impersonating members of our staff and calling community members to demand payment in relation to ‘urgent legal matters,” the department said on its Facebook page Wednesday. “The scammer or scammers are using the names of real officers, likely found online, to make the scam more believable.”

Authorities say anybody who has received such a call should hang up and report the incident using this online tool: https://horrycountysc.gov/departments/police/citizens/

Anyone with concerns over pending warrants can call (843) 915-8347.
