Scam warning: Watch for electrical ‘inspectors’

CANTON, Ohio (WJW) — Canton residents should be wary of scammers impersonating “third-party electrical inspectors” in order to enter homes, warned Mayor William Sherer II.

Residents on Monday, April 22, started reporting the visits to City Hall, saying the scammers posed as representatives of a third-party electrical company, and that a newly passed Ohio law allows them to enter.

“We are unaware of any such law that would permit these people access into the homes of our residents,” Sherer is quoted in a Tuesday news release.

“Never under any circumstances should you let these individuals into your home.”

Representatives of AEP Ohio, the electrical distributor serving the city, said visits from contractors are always scheduled in advance by phone, according to the release.

Anyone who gets an unscheduled, unsolicited visit from a so-called inspector should not let them in the home. Residents who feel unsafe should call 911, according to the release.
