Scam alert: Unpaid toll texts circulating in Macon Co.

MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Macon County Sheriff’s Office is warning people of a text scam circulating in the area.

The text, which claims it is from the “Illinois toll way,” tells the recipient that they have an outstanding toll bill. To pay the alleged toll and avoid a “late fee” of $50, recipients are then asked to follow a specific link.

Macon County law enforcement says this is a scam. They urge people not to click on the link or respond with any information.

The scam may extend beyond Macon County as well. On Illinois Tollway’s real website, there is currently a banner alerting Illinoisans of the text phishing scam:

“The Illinois Tollway is advising I-PASS customers to disregard phishing texts being sent to their phones from ‘Illinois toll way’ that detail a specific outstanding toll amount,” the alert reads. “If you receive a text and are unsure, please check your account online at www.illinoistollway.com or call our customer service center at 1-800-UC-IPASS (1-800-824-7277) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.”

The warning goes on to say that such texts should be deleted, and that those who receive them should file a complaint at www.ic3.gov.
