Ukraine's SBU security service arrested a hostile informant in Donetsk oblast who was spying on military airbases in the Kramatorsk area for the Russian Wagner mercenary company, the SBU reported on Telegram on May 2.

The suspect was tasked with identifying and transmitting precise coordinates of the airbases where Ukrainian military helicopters are stationed.

Wagner also sought to ascertain the locations of deployment of personnel and heavy weaponry of Ukrainian forces defending Kramatorsk.

The Russians intended to use the obtained data for combat operations planning on the Kramatorsk and Slovyansk fronts.

The suspect turned out to be a local resident who was an ideological supporter of the Kremlin regime.

He agreed to work for the Russians as early as the fall of 2023. They remotely recruited him through his acquaintance, a Russian woman who also worked for the Wagner mercenaries.

The informant communicated with the Russian citizen via messenger, after which he regularly deleted all messages.

He would traverse the area on foot, covertly capturing the surrounding territory under the guise of a stroll to gather intelligence.

SBU investigators have charged him with the unauthorized dissemination of information regarding the direction, movement of weapons, armament, and combat supplies to Ukraine, as well as the movement or deployment of Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The suspect is now in custody. He faces up to 8 years in prison if convicted.
