Savannah Bananas in Baton Rouge: What to know about parking, times, weather

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Savannah Bananas are coming to Baton Rouge to play “Banana Ball” at Alex Box Stadium from March 14-16.

The Bananas is a circus-like baseball team based in Savannah, Georgia that performs choreographed dances at every game. The team will be making its only collegiate venue appearance in the city, according to LSU Baseball.

The team also plays in kilts and has sold out every game since their first season, according to the Savannah Bananas website.

All three games begin at 7 p.m.

Parking

Free parking is on a first-come, first-served basis and is available in the Old Front Nine, Gourrier South, Levee South and Hayfield lots.

LSU encourages fans to park in lots to the west of Nicholson Drive and to use the Waze app to help find the best route to their parking lot.

If approaching the stadium from the north, LSU says to use either River Road or Nicholson Drive. If approaching the stadium from the south, use River Road, Nicholson Drive or Burbank Drive. Parking will be available west of the stadium in lots on Gourrier Avenue.

If you’re heading to the stadium from the east, LSU says to use College Drive, the Acadian/Stanford exit, Highland Road, or Burbank Drive and Nicholson Drive. Parking will be available west of the stadium in lots on Gourrier Avenue.

LSU has a drop-off zone on Gourrier Avenue in front of the stadium near Gate 2. LSU says fans can be dropped off at this location starting three hours before the first pitch. The car must leave immediately after the drop-off.

Weather

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected the weekend of the game. Despite the weather, Bananas’ team president and general manager Jared Orton said the show generally goes on.

“We’ve never encountered a rainstorm that’s knocked us out. And so our players get pretty active, our characters get pretty active, our entertainment team goes into full rain mode and puts on a show for people,” Orton said. “And so everywhere we’ve ever been, you know, folks still get here early. We get in the stadium. We get them covered up and then the show goes into the stands. People have told us before that sometimes the rain delays are more fun than the game.”

If there is a rain delay, Orton said they work with the stadium staff and that an announcement will be made to let people know what’s going on.

“If it ever did get to a situation where we couldn’t start the game or couldn’t open the gates we would do our best to make it up for the people who had tickets but everything we’ve ever done is to ensure that people are here safe and they’re having a good time,” Orton said.
