Saturday storms cause flooding around Kansas City metro

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City received a break from the rain on Sunday, but flooding started in some parts of the metro area.

In Blue Springs, the Kansas City Curling Club started seeing water enter the building on Saturday night.

“I knew when it was coming down that we needed to keep an eye on electricity,” said club president, DeeAnn Wlodarski. “You lose electricity in an ice rink, that’s a bad thing.”

She woke up on Sunday morning to a text that just said ‘water’. “At that point I’m usually worried that our ice is melting,” she said. The ice was still frozen but other rooms in the building had flooded.

“It was up past my ankles as I was walking through it in some of the areas, so it was pretty significant,” Wlodarski said.

“Yeah, who would think that that’s going to happen. But we had so much rain that what are you going to do? You’re just going to come in and try to deal with it.” So, Wlodarski and other club members started trying to clean up.

However, they found that through cracks in the concrete floor, water was still flowing. “As we were squeegeeing it, it kept replacing everything we did.”

She took to Facebook to ask for anyone with better equipment to lend them a hand. Thankfully, their neighbors came through.

“A couple of community members brought us stuff that we could use and then a bunch of our curlers came up with squeegees and shop vacs to kind of help us get it under control all day,” she said.

“We just weren’t expecting this kind of water coming in.”
