DAPHNE, Ala. (WKRG) — The K9 War Dog Ride Poker Chip Run is helping dog war veterans come home for retirement this Saturday in Daphne.

Andy Earl with Mission K9, an organization that helps “rescue, reunite, re-home, rehabilitate and repair any retired working dog that has served mankind in some capacity,” explained that the reason dogs often cannot come back home after retirement is due to the type of dog they are.

There are two types of working dogs: contract and military. Contract dogs often don’t come back, explained Earl.

Earl brought K9 Mikki, a dog who he says “was in Poland for about a year and a half” with him to talk with WKRG News 5’s Cherish Lombard on the red couch. He explained that the event —scheduled for Saturday, April 13 at Top of the Bay in Daphne — helps benefit retired contract dogs like Mikki.

LOCATION:

“The problem is when the contract runs out instead of bringing them back they either choose to euthanize them or release them into the population or lock them away in the kennel until they die to keep from spending the money to bring them back.”

Attendees to the K9 War Dog Ride Poker Chip Run can help to bring the K9 warriors home by visiting different checkpoints and drawing a playing card. There will be three stops at this Saturday’s event, according to Earl and high scores will win a prize.
