‘Saturday Night Live’s Halloween 2016: One Trick, One Treat

There was nothing to match Bill Hader’s 2008 “Vincent Price’s Halloween Special”, but Saturday Night Live offered up one seasonal treat – and, not so happily, one trick – last night. The treat was the digital short “A Girl’s Halloween,” with Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong and Vanessa Bayer getting kittened up for a New York City Halloween, all cute whiskers and no-drink promises. Flashforward to a very sloppy night on the town, full of tears, tumbles, recriminations and, in the end, the funniest use of green make-up since Eddie Murphy went all Gumby. Watch it above.

As for the trick, SNL attempted one of its more-weird-than-funny bits, and as so often happens merely arrived at annoying. “Haunted Elevator” was set in one of those theatrical haunted houses lately springing up in Manhattan’s old warehouses. This one features the usual ghost brides and severed heads, until a goofy character named David Pumpkins (Hanks, in a jack o’ lantern sport coat and curly perm) keeps popping up. The visitors (Beck Bennett, Kate McKinnon) are more confused than scared, and weren’t we all.
