Sarasota County school bus involved in accident leaving bus driver, students with injuries

A Sarasota County school bus was involved in an accident with a car, with several student passengers needing medical assistance, the School District said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

School Bus #2018, carrying Venice High School students leaving Suncoast Polytechnical High School, was involved in the accident at the intersection of Beneva and Clark roads, the district said.

The bus driver and four students received minor medical attention, and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the crash, according to the statement.

The district offered no additional details as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office in a social media post on X advised in the afternoon that all travel lanes on Beneva were closed just south of Clark Road at the intersection of Meridale "due to a multi-vehicle accident" and would remain shut down for "several hours." The post advised motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

This is a developing story, check back for additional details.
