Hollywood stars are leading the way at the 2024 Olivier Awards, with Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Scherzinger and David Tennant among the nominees.

The annual awards for excellence in the West End are dominated by performers more familiar from the big screen than the stage. Andrew Scott and James Norton have also been nominated.

Joseph Fiennes is in the running for his starring role as Gareth Southgate in Dear England. The play about the England football team has earned the most nominations with nine, including best actor for Fiennes.

Sex and the City star Parker has received a best actress nomination for her role in the comedy Plaza Suite, alongside her husband Matthew Broderick.

Singer and former X Factor judge Scherzinger is in the running for best actress in a musical for her leading role in Lord Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard.

David Tennant has been nominated for a best actor award for his starring role in Macbeth, Fleabag star Scott has been named in the same category for playing every part in the Chekhov adaptation, Vanya, while Happy Valley villain Norton is also in contention for his role in A Little Life.

A play about a celebrity row, Vardy V Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial, is also among the nominees for the best comedy play.

Dear England leads the way with nominations in major categories including best writer, for James Graham, and best director, for Rupert Goold. Staged by the National Theatre, it centres on the manager attempting to “face up to the years of hurt to take the team and country back to the promised land”.

The influence of screen stars on the London stage follows the success last year of Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, who won best actress for her West End debut in Prima Facie. Paul Mescal, known for Normal People and Aftersun, won best actor for his own debut, in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Following her triumph at the awards ceremony held at the Royal Albert Hall, Comer said: “One thing I would like to say to any kids who haven’t been to drama school, who can’t afford to go to drama school, who have been rejected from drama school, don’t let anyone tell you that it isn’t possible.

“It might take the stars to align and you to be met with generous, kind, patient people, but it is possible.”
