Sarah Jessica Parker Confesses ‘Sex and the City’ Feud Rumors ‘Upset Me for a Very Long Time’
Sarah Jessica Parker is setting the record straight when it comes to her rumored feuds with the women of Sex and the City.
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, the actress brushed off ancient chatter regarding catfights with her costars — including Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis — saying it would “drive me bananas.”
“It used to really confound me and really upset me because we were part of a family of Sopranos and no one ever questioned the relationships of the men on that show and no one ever said to them, ‘Did you hang out this weekend with each other? Did you give each other Christmas presents?’ ” Parker, 51, told the host. “These were my sisters, these were people that I grew to love and admire.”
“Was every day perfect? Were people always desperately, hopefully in love with each other?,” she rhetorically asked. “No, but this is a family of people who needed each other, relied upon each other and loved each other. This sort of narrative, this ongoing catfight, it really upset me for a very long time.”
After six seasons of the beloved HBO series, Parker admitted that she was at first “panicked” to be locked down to a TV series.
“In my head it was just the same thing over and over again,” she said. “It felt like someone had put me in a straitjacket in theory.”
Ultimately, it was her husband of 21 years Matthew Broderick — along with her older brother, Pippin, and agent, Kevin Huvane — that convinced her to take the role. The deciding factor? One, jaw-dropping scene.
“It was the last moment of that script,” said Parker. “[Carrie] is with Big and he picks her up on the street or something … they talk about being in love and not being in love and she’s being kind of glib. He says, ‘Have you ever been in love?’ I think she’s sort of dismissive and cavalier and then she gets out of the car and starts walking towards the door and she turns around and knocks on his window. He pulls it down and she says, ‘Have you ever been in love?’ And he says, ‘Abso-f——lutely.’ She turns and it freeze frames on her face and I was like, ‘Oh! There’s a story here. There’s an amazing story to be told.’ “
