SAPD warns against new ‘victim helping’ phone scam

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The San Angelo Police Department has issued a warning for San Angelo residents after it received reports that a new phone scam is targeting locals.

According to an announcement made by the SAPD, the unknown person or people behind the scam are calling citizens and claiming that “someone the victim knows is in trouble and that money is needed to ‘help’ them out.”

The SAPD has received two calls for service regarding the same in the past week, with at least one victim losing “a substantial amount of money” to the scam.

The police department asks residents to spread the word about the scam to help protect their loved ones from it.

“We ask that the public do their part in spreading the word to help prevent their family, friends, or loved ones from becoming victims to these scams,” the SAPD said in the announcement.
