How To Visit The Beautiful Greek Island Of Santorini On A Budget

Santorini is one famous holiday location for the summer. And for someone who’s been there already, I have to say that I understand why it’s so popular. It’s absolutely amazing and definitely worth visiting at least once in a lifetime.

After looking at what travel agencies had to offer, I decided to take it on my own and plan my perfect holiday. I realised that with less money I can get better deals and much better accommodation.

So this is a breakdown of what I found and the costs so you can have the perfect holiday too!

Getting there:

You have two options:

  • Fly directly to Santorini: prices from £200 per person, checked from London and Manchester, for the Summer. For more prices check Skyscanner.net

  • Or fly to Athens: prices from £130 per person, checked from London and Manchester, for the Summer.

  • And then get the boat to Santorini: prices from £120 per person. More prices at FantasticGreece.com.

The second option might be slightly cheaper, but it takes more time to get to the island (the boat can take up to 8 hours).

Accommodation:

You can find great accommodation with sea view from only £200/room (3-4 nights). For those hotels with your own swimming pool and terrace, the prices start from around £800/room. The best options are on Booking.com.

We chose the cheaper alternative and it was absolutely amazing. We could watch the sunrise from our bed and we enjoyed our meals with a sea view. Breakfast was included, we had our own terrace, a shared swimming pool, air con, TV and all other goodies to make it all perfect.

Food and Drinks

This is where you can absolutely go to town with your spending. Fresh food and delicious wine is affordable even in the luxurious places. You can have a meal from £10/person with a drink included. The most we spent was £50 for both of us, where we got to taste 22 different wines, plus food. The place was called Santo Wines and it has the most amazing location and atmosphere!

Transport on the Island

You will need some form of transportation while on the island. It has many many places that you need to visit and taking the bus is not what you want on a hot summer day. So you can always rent a car or (make it even more fun) an ATV for about £30/day.

Organised Day Trips

When you get there, ask your host/hotel for a list of all the organised day trips. They are more or less the same, but there is one that includes absolutely everything worth seeing in Santorini: Visit to all the Islands - The Active Vulcano - And Oia for the most popular sunset. Total cost is around £30/person. For the same trip but more luxury, you can pay slightly more here. Don’t book it in advance though, you can always decide one day ahead.

Other museums were either free or around £4/person.
