Santa Rosa County accepting vegetative debris from severe weather

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — Santa Rosa County residents can dispose of vegetative debris from last week’s severe weather free of charge at Howell Pit, according to a release from county officials.

Howell Pit is located on Howell Pit Road in Jay, and residents can drop off vegetative debris from Tuesday, May 21, through Saturday, June 1.

The pit is open Monday through Saturday 8 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will be open on Memorial Day.

Residents should know the county will not be picking up debris.

The Santa Rosa County release said fees will only be waived for vegetative debris, and mixed debris will not be accepted at Howell Pit.

“This service is for residents only and an ID must be presented to prove residency,” the release said. “Commercial haulers will be accepted with submission of work orders for locations within Santa Rosa County. Commercial haulers must present a copy of work orders upon each entry.”

Santa Rosa County residents can also work with waste haulers to have their vegetative debris picked up. Two options are Waste Pro and Adams Sanitation.

Waste Pro

  • “Yard waste collection is included in weekly pickup service if properly prepared for collection.

  • All small debris such as leaves, pine straw, and grass clippings should be placed in the provided brown cart.

  • Items too large for the cart such as tree limbs, palm fronds, etc., should be bundled and neatly stacked in piles no longer than six feet, six inches in diameter, and less than 50 pounds per bundle.

  • Bundles must be secured with twine or string, no metal wire or any other material.

  • Secured bundles should not exceed three feet wide, three feet high, and six feet long.

  • No yard waste cart, including the cart itself and its contents, shall exceed 150 pounds.

  • Yard debris does not include debris generated by tree surgeons, commercial landscape, or lawn maintenance contractors

Adams Sanitation

  • “Yard waste is picked up once a month, contact Adams Sanitation when yard waste pickup is needed, 850-537-3282.

  • Leaves, twigs, grass clippings and sticks should be in the standard 95 gallon trash bin or bagged and placed next to the trash bin.

  • Limbs should be no larger than six inches in diameter and four feet long.

  • Bundles should be no more than three feet in total diameter.

  • The limit for the once a month pick up is 10 piles of leaves and one bundle of branches.
