Santa Fe High School shooting survivor: 'I've always felt it would eventually happen here, too'

A young student who survived Friday's shooting at a Texas high school told a reporter that she was not at all surprised by the attack, which left at least eight people dead.

The Santa Fe High School student, who is reportedly named Paige, was asked, "Was there a part of you that was like, 'This could not happen at my school?"

"No," she responded dejectedly. "It's been happening everywhere. I’ve always felt it would eventually happen here, too."

Clips of the girl's heartbreaking response have since gone viral on Twitter, racking up thousands of retweets across multiple accounts.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that between eight and 10 victims were killed in Friday's attack, the latest in a rash of gun violence incidents across the country.

Gonzalez also said that one suspect was taken into custody and a second one was detained in relation to the shooting.

President Donald Trump addressed the nation from the White House following the massacre, expressing his "sadness and heartbreak" over the "absolutely horrific" attack.

“This has been going on too long in our country. Too many years, too many decades now,” Trump said.

"My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others."
