Sanitation worker struck and killed by his own garbage truck in Spruce Creek South

A sanitation worker was killed Tuesday morning in an accident with his own garbage truck. Here's what we know:

Investigating agency: Florida Highway Patrol.

What time? 9 a.m. Tuesday

Where? In the Spruce Creek South subdivision, along Southeast 108th Terrace in Summerfield. The development is a 55-and-older community just west of U.S. 441 in southeast Marion County.

Arrest: Man accused of 2023 hit-and-run fatality arrested

About the crash: Troopers said a garbage truck from a private recycling company was in the subdivision and an employee was putting garbage in the back when the truck struck him. The victim died at the scene, FHP officials said. The 63-year-old driver, an Ocala man, was not injured.

Who was the victim? He was 25, from Ocala. The patrol no longer provides the names of people involved in crashes.
