Sanford police service calls up in April; parking lot mishaps remain steady

May 17—The Sanford Police Department had 1,956 calls for service in April, a slight rise from the 1,940 received in March.

The numbers are in the department's Month in Review posted on its Facebook page.

Officers responded to 129 traffic accidents in April compared with 114 in March.

Drivers continued to have bump-ups in parking lots while many of the collisions are attributed to distracted or inattentive drivers.

That's not always the case. An individual operating a motorcycle was trying to back out of a parking space. However, he told police he lost his balance causing the motorcycle to fall over and a car in an adjacent space.

Another driver was cited for running a stop sign and crashing into a vehicle. He told the officer he was upset having been fired from his job minutes before.

Then, there's driver who "admitted he wasn't paying attention and hit a car at a gas pump as he was preparing to leave," according to the accident report.

In April, Sanford police made 33 felony arrests compared to 22 in March. But arrests on misdemeanor charges surged from 83 in March to 109 in April.

Fraud reports continued to remain steady in April with at least 10 incidents investigated.
