Sanford man dead after vehicle crashes into tree in Kennebunk

KENNEBUNK, Maine — A local man is dead after the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a tree at the intersection of Brown and Swan streets Thursday, according to police.

Freeman Hatch, 45, of Sanford, was discovered unresponsive at the wheel of the truck when first responders arrived at the scene at approximately 11:45 a.m., according to the Kennebunk Police Department.

Emergency personnel tried to save Hatch’s life at the scene. Kennebunk Fire Rescue brought him to Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, where he was pronounced dead.

Hatch was driving north on Brown Street when his truck left the road, crossed over Swan Street, and hit the tree, according to police.

“Preliminary investigative reports indicate Hatch may have suffered a medical event while operating the vehicle, but the cause has yet to be determined,” the KPD said in a news release.

Authorities closed Brown and Swan streets for a while as emergency personnel tended to the scene.

The Kennebunk Police Department and an accident reconstruction specialist from the York Police Department are investigating the crash.
