Sand Mountain Electric Co-op warning customers about telephone scam

RAINSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative (SMEC) is warning its customers about a potential scam asking for payment or personal information over the phone.

SMEC says a customer reported a potential scam telephone call from a co-op number.

“Customers should always be suspicious of anyone calling to collect money and asking for personal information,” SMEC said in a post about the scam on social media.

The co-op reminded customers that it doesn’t make phone calls asking for payment for their bills or past due accounts, and it also does not request financial information over the phone.

SMEC said that if you or someone you know receives a call like this, you should gather as much information as possible from the caller and contact the co-op as soon as possible so the scam can be investigated by calling (256) 638-2153.
