Sand Fire Covers Southern California in Smoke
Firefighters in Los Angeles are battling a 51-square-mile fire that a fire department official called almost unprecedented.
The Sand Fire has already burned 18 homes, and is threatening as many as 1,500 more according to NBC Los Angeles.
It is also blanketing the region in smoke, turning the sky an apocalyptic orange and brown.
This fire, what we've seen in 72 hours, is almost unprecedented, Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Dennis Cross said at a press conference. We'd have to go back a long way to compare a fire to this.
On Monday morning, the fire was only 10 percent contained. Officials issued a smoke advisory, telling those in Los Angeles to avoid strenuous activity outdoors, and to keep windows and doors closed.
