An investigation determined the cause of the fires to be arson, officials stated. The arson occurred on State of California property at a time when students were present. A joint law enforcement investigation was launched in collaboration between Cal Fire, campus police, and the OSFM Arson and Bomb Unit.

Investigators canvassed the area, reviewed security camera footage, cultivated leads and identified the suspect as SJSU sophomore student Amogh Upadhya. Upadhya was arrested, charged with four counts of arson, and booked into Santa Clara County Jail.

He is currently being held on $400,000 bail and faced a court hearing on Friday.
