San Joaquin Co. DA wants to waive, reduce fines for small crimes amid pandemic

The San Joaquin County District Attorney wants to wave fines for small crimes during the pandemic. DA Tori Salazar made the request to the Superior Court. She says people are struggling financially more than ever and paying the fines is an unfair burden. The letter reads in part: “As you are aware 40% of our population cannot withstand a $400.00 household emergency, let alone the high fines and fees attached to infractions, traffic violations, and misdemeanors. These punitive fines, coupled with the additional costs such as towing fees and DMV fines, are contributing to the homeless crisis in our community. Imposing excessive fines does not achieve justice, but rather places an undue burden upon the families struggling during this health and economic pandemic.”
