A San Francisco penthouse atop 1927 Art Deco building lists for under $4M. See the views

Literally sitting atop history, a spectacular San Francisco penthouse — the crown of the Cathedral Apartments — has hit the market for $3.75 million with views throughout of the city’s most popular landmarks, from the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge to Coit Tower and Salesforce Tower.

The elegant two-bedroom, three-bathroom residence in the Nob Hill neighborhood spans spans 2,257 square feet. Built in 1927, the Cathedral Apartments at 1201 California St. was designed by renowned architect Charles P. Weeks, whose work in San Francisco includes the Huntington and Sir Francis Drake hotels, the Brocklebank Apartments and many mansions in Pacific Heights and Presidio Heights.

Art Deco inspired, the 84-unit Cathedral Apartments building is entered through a distinctive and elaborate portico. The lobby’s columns, arches, windows and ceilings take on a moorish motif. And atop the historic structure sits Unit 1602 — with an entry foyer leading to a stunning living room highlighted by San Francisco city and bay views, 12-foot coffered ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace with an ornate white mantel.

In addition, the penthouse has a solarium, formal dining room, chef’s kitchen, big primary suite and a second en-suite bedroom, according to the property description. There is custom detail work throughout.

The top of the tall spire of nearby Grace Cathedral can be seen from the penthouse, as well.

The listing price is $550,000 higher than the median sales price for luxury condominiums in San Francisco. For the past 12-month period, the median sales price for condos priced at or above $2.5 million is $3.2 million, according to Compass chief market analyst Patrick Carlisle. There were 93 luxury condominium sales from March 2023 to March 2024.

At 2,257 square feet, the median size of those luxury units was about 2,400 square feet. Like the Cathedral Apartments penthouse, many offer spectacular views.
