San Francisco fans needs to keep Kaepernick in perspective

As recent as week two at Carolina, when San Francisco was struggling in the second half, the calls could be heard. A bad pass, a pick, a 3 and out, and the whispers would get louder. Last Thursday night it was undeniable at Levi. Fans have claimed their stake to their quarterback, and now, so has Chip Kelly and so have the 49ers, (mostly). Kaepernick is in.

There’s no looking back now.

Given how things have been going, the bye week was the most logical of times to make a change. It also has become a perfect storm of ineptitude on the field, and a tide quickly turning. Chip Kelly held out as long as he could. Toss in a bad game with some crippling errors courtesy of Blaine Gabbert, and the switch was inevitable.

A couple of interesting points worth making. Kaepernick is still 12-15 pounds underweight, and their is no indication it’s coming back. His diet just isn’t allowing it. How durable he can be will be an interesting watch. I personally think he can do well with the “read option”, and if he can find any kind, ANY KIND of rhythm, San Francisco could find some success with this switch.

Also, and less spoken of but already heard, is Chip Kelly. Whenever the 49ers come up, and given the 1-4 start, Kelly’s system becomes a popular whipping post. I’m still a believer that his system can work. And if he can find and sustain any kind of momentum, he can build a team that can execute his offense.

Still missing however, is his trigger man. If Kelly is the coach after they jettison Harbaugh, maybe Kaepernick and Chip put something together. Time has diminished that theory.

Who knows.

But as I wrote two weeks ago, Kelly is a smart guy. He likely already knows that a switch from Gabbert to Kaepernick is equal parts “hopeful” about getting better, and making a switch for the sake of making a switch.

He also likely knows that his future quarterback just isn’t on this team. Still, Kelly might think he’s the guy to resurrect this quarterback. All coaches think that.

He’s got his chance. Who knows, maybe for Chip Kelly and Colin Kaepernick, the second time around will work.
