San Diego opera no longer operable, votes to close
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego is saying "so long" to sopranos and "arrividerci" to arias.
The board of the opera that has been a city cultural institution for 49 years voted overwhelmingly to shut down Wednesday.
The company will give its four season-ending performances of "Don Quixote," then shut down for good April 13.
The opera's General Artistic Director and CEO Ian Campbell told the board before their 33-1 vote that the institution with its $15 million operating budget is so broke that closing is the only viable thing to do.
Campbell tells U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/1g2nNIK ) the choice will allow the opera to wind down "with dignity and grace" rather than scrape for pennies.
The national organization Opera America says San Diego's was the 10th biggest opera company in the country.
