These San Diego County schools recognized as Purple Star Schools

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — More than a dozen schools in San Diego County have been recognized as 2024 Purple Star Schools.

The California Purple Star School Designation Program which acknowledges schools that meet the unique needs of military-connected students and their families, the California Department of Education said in a news release Wednesday.

San Diego County accounted for 23 of the 44 schools chosen statewide as 2024 Purple Star Schools. Here are the local schools selected:

  • Vivian Banks Charter School

Chula Vista Elementary School District

  • Corky McMillin Elementary School

Fallbrook Union Elementary School District

  • Fallbrook STEM Academy

  • James E Potter Junior High

  • Live Oak Elementary School

  • Maie Ellis Elementary School

  • Mary Fay Pendleton Elementary School

  • La Paloma Elementary School

  • William H. Frazier Elementary

Oceanside Unified School District

  • North Terrace Elementary School

  • Oceanside High School

  • Stuart Mesa School

Poway Unified School District

  • Bernardo Heights Middle School

San Diego Unified School District

Purple Star Schools aim to provide support for military-connected students and their families as military-connected children can expect to change schools between six and nine times from grades K-12, according to education officials.

“I commend the remarkable dedication and support shown by the winning schools of the California Purple Star School Designation Program. By embracing and enhancing services for military-connected students and their families, these schools exemplify our commitment to inclusivity, understanding, and excellence in education,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. “Their efforts not only enrich the educational experience but also foster a sense of belonging and appreciation for our military community.”

Of the 2.6 million United States active-duty service members and individuals serving in the National Guard and Reserves, 242,624 of them were in California in 2022, per the department of education.
