San Diego County confirms third case of measles this year

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Another case of measles has been confirmed in San Diego County, according to health officials Tuesday afternoon.

Public health officials said the third case of measles in the county this year has been detected in a 13-month-old resident who had recently traveled overseas.

They said the infant was unimmunized and may have exposed others to measles at the following locations and times:

  • Children’s Primary Care Medical Group El Cajon located at 844 Jackman St., on Sunday from 9:10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

  • Rady Children’s Emergency Department located on the first floor at 3020 Children’s Way in San Diego on Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Previously, two cases of measles have been reported in the county since the beginning of this year.

According to health officials, the first case of 2024 was reported back in February in an unvaccinated infant who had also traveled overseas. This was followed by another case detected in a 47-year-old resident at the end of March. Officials said the infected adult had also recently traveled overseas.

None of the cases are related, but all of them are associated with international travel, the county said Tuesday. The last confirmed measles case in the county was reported in 2019.

Symptoms of measles start to develop seven to 21 days after exposure and may include fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, according to health experts. A person is considered contagious four days before and after a red rash appears on one’s face and head.

There is currently no treatment for measles, although complications are more common in children younger than five and adults over the age of 20.
