When San Diegans can expect election night results

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — There are 217 voting centers all across San Diego County this election season and, with nearly two million registered voters, counting election night results could take some time.

According to the Registrar of Voters, centers have been open since Feb. 24 for early voting. Mail ballots are counted if they are postmarked on or before Election Day and received by March 12.

So, what happens to ballots after they are cast?

Super Tuesday: What it is and why it matters

The first set of official election night results comes in shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday. This includes mail ballots received before Election Day and ballots from early voting between Feb. 24 and March 4.

After the first set of results is announced, only the number of ballots from voting centers will be updated.

After voting centers close at 8 p.m. Tuesday, poll workers will pack up and drive the rest of the ballots from each center across the county to the Registrar’s office. Updates will continue throughout the night until all ballots from voting centers are reported.

People who did not register to vote by Feb. 20 can conditionally register and vote provisionally up to and on Election Day. Once their registration is validated by the Registrar’s office, their provisional ballot is counted.

The next batch of unofficial election night results will be posted by 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday following Election Day, and by 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday the following week.

Additional updates will be made at the discretion of the Registrar of Voters. The results are not considered official until they are certified by April 4.
