Samsung is reportedly in early talks with antitrust regulators in the European Union to settle a case that charges the company with attempting to bar Apple from using a standards essential patent in its mobile devices. ”Samsung has been involved in settlement discussions for several months now. Samsung wants to settle,” an unnamed source told Reuters on Tuesday. Samsung had previously tried to ban sales of the iPhone and iPad in Europe after making the case that the devices were infringing its protected IP, which happened to fall under the category of standards essential, making Samsung’s efforts illegal. The South Korean smartphone maker faces a potential fine of more than $15 billion, so it makes sense that Samsung is eager to settle the charges.
