Samsung is going all-out to prevent the Galaxy S8 from Note 7-ing
A new report says that both Samsung and LG will make use of thermal pipes for their 2017 flagship devices to prevent overheating. LG had already confirmed it’ll employ heat pipes inside the LG G6, suggesting it’s taking extra measures to avoid unwanted accidents. Samsung, meanwhile, will also use a thermal pipe inside the Galaxy S8 for the same purpose.

Supply chain sources told Digitimes that the Galaxy S8 will contain thermal pipes from Taiwan-based Auras Technology and Chaun Chong Technology. The LG G6 will have heat pipes from Japan-based Furukawa Electric and Taiwan-based Delta Electronics.
The report also notes that the Galaxy S8 was meant to have two ultra-thin heat pipes that would enhance heat dissipation, but the sources said the phone will use the same single ultra-thin heat pipe design as the Galaxy S7. Mass shipments of this component should start in February, the sources noted.
Digitimes says the Galaxy S8 should launch in March.
Samsung’s previous two flagships — Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7 — also shipped with built-in heat pipes. But this component alone does not prevent battery overheating and explosions on the Galaxy Note 7.
Samsung is expected to announce the results of its Galaxy Note 7 investigation on Monday, at which point it’ll also highlight other measures it’s taking to prevent battery explosions in the Galaxy S8.
Aside from employing heat pipes, LG will also conduct extensive testing on the G6 to prevent explosions.
