PARIS (AP) — U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur moved into the second round of the French Open by beating Elena Baltacha of Britain 6-4, 6-0 Sunday.

The sixth-seeded Australian, who reached the final at Roland Garros in 2010 and the semifinals in 2009, led 5-2 in the first set before allowing Baltacha to get back on serve at 5-4. But Stosur broke for the second time in the match to take the set.

No. 20 Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic also advanced, beating Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus 6-2, 6-0.

Former French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova also won on Day 1, while seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams was to play later in the day.

None of the top three men were in action in Paris on opening day.
