Sam Querrey advances past Kevin Anderson to Wimbledon quarterfinals
Sam Querrey keeps chugging along at Wimbledon, taking down Kevin Anderson of South Africa 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 6-3, 6-7(11-13), 6-3 in a five-set thriller. The 29-year-old American is into the quarterfinal for the second straight year.
The key for Querrey was converting on break chances. While the 24 seed only had three chances, he converted on two of them. Anderson, on the other hand, converted just once on seven opportunities. Querrey also committed just one double fault — Anderson had five — and 18 errors to Anderson’s 28.
The highlight of the match was a thrilling fourth-set tiebreak. At first it didn’t look like much of a contest: Querrey quickly found himself down 5-1. But then he reeled off five straight points to take the lead. Ultimately, Anderson managed to fend off three match points and force a fifth set. It was for naught, though, as Querrey breezed through the fifth.
It was the second straight five-set win for Querrey, who went the distance to beat Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the third round. The lone American man still standing, Querrey will face world No. 1 Andy Murray in the quarters. He has beaten Murray once in eight tries: at Los Angeles in 2010.
