Sam Moore (Sam & Dave) to Play Trump Inaugural Event

Sam Moore of soul/R&B duo Sam & Dave has announced that he will perform at the “Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration” on January 19 in Washington, D.C. “I was a participant in the civil rights movement and have seen many positive changes and advancement in my 81 years of living in this wonderful country, but I know we must all join hands and work together with our new President,” the “Soul Man” singer said in a press release. “I honestly believe that if we can accomplish this, the best is yet to come. We all as Americans need to unite behind our new President and give him a chance. He needs everyone’s support to make America greater, stronger and an even better country.”
Other musicians playing events around the inauguration include 3 Doors Down and Toby Keith. Broadway singer Jennifer Holliday recently announced that she would perform at the “Welcome Celebration” event and then cancelled, apologizing “for my lapse of judgement, for being uneducated on the issues that affect every American at this crucial time in history.” Meanwhile, Moore, speaking to the Associated Press, said, “I am not going to let them, the left side, intimidate me from doing what I feel is the right thing to do for the country and that (presidential) seal.”
Back in 1996, Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole co-opted Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man” during his campaign, changing the lyric to “I’m a Dole man.” The campaign only ceased using the song after being a threatened with a lawsuit by the song’s publishing company.
