Sam Burgess to stay in Australia's NRL until 2023

SYDNEY (AP) — England star Sam Burgess will end his rugby league career in Australia in 2023 after signing a four-year contract extension with South Sydney in the National Rugby League.

Burgess had been contracted to the Rabbitohs until the end of 2019 but boosted the club's spirits ahead of this season's playoffs by agreeing to stay for four more years. He said the deal, announced Wednesday, would be the last of his career and he will retire at its conclusion.

Burgess says "I'd like to leave the game while I'm still playing good football. I don't want to play if I'm not doing the club justice and I'm not doing the right thing by the team."

After making his name in the English Super League, Burgess first signed for Souths in 2010.
