Salvation Army’s Derby Day raises over $60K

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary (SAWA) annual style show and fundraiser reportedly raised over $60,000 for the Salvation Army.

According to a statement, the theme of the style show was “Winning the Race to Bless Another,” while women modeled “some of Spring’s latest fashions” participants bid on which styles they liked the most. SAWA said that local businesses and individuals also donated items for a silent auction hosted at the event.

“It’s a wonderful experience, working with other Christian women,” Kathy Atherton, co-chair of the event, said. “It’s so fun, I love the enthusiasm of the women who volunteer with me, and it really reenergizes me to continue to do the Lord’s work because we see how much it helps the people in need in our community. There are so many people here that are willing to help. It’s just amazing!”

The Salvation Army of Tyler said that SAWA was first founded in Tyler in 1986 as a volunteer organization of likeminded women to help further the mission of the Salvation Army. SAWA said that their first fundraiser was a garage sale in 1988 that raised $1,000.

SAWA said that their next event will be an annual Spring Sale at the Salvation Army of Tyler’s campus on April 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Salvation Army said that the sale will include clothing, furniture, household items and children items.
